What is a Cranial Prosthesis?

Hair loss due to medical conditions or treatments like Alopecia Areata, Alopecia Totalis, Trichotillomania, or chemotherapy can be distressing. A hair prosthesis, also called a Cranial Prosthesis, is a personalized wig that can be a solution for those who have lost their hair. These prostheses are designed to cater to each patient's unique needs and are also used for tax deduction purposes and medical insurance claims. Doctors have been prescribing cranial prostheses since the 1950s, and these prostheses have evolved with advanced technology.

Unlike regular wigs, cranial hair prostheses require a mold of the patient's head to ensure a perfect fit. The base is made of hypoallergenic fabric, suitable for sensitive scalps prone to allergies. The hair is attached in a way that avoids scalp contact. In addition to covering hair loss, cranial prostheses also help to protect weakened immune systems from the sun and regulate body temperature.

These are the different types of cap construction available to create a personalized hair prosthesis just for you! It's worth mentioning that we can also make combination units. Our Lace Fronts are highly popular because of their natural look and we can still offer that with our Combo Cranial Prosthesis, which includes lace at the front for a natural hairline, Polyurethane (PU) throughout to keep the unit in place, and cover any baldness or thinning. Alternatively, we can create a Lace front with PU around the perimeter and Mono throughout the unit. If you have baldness, we recommend our PU units, while our Monofilament (Mono) units are great for ventilation. If you need to apply a cream or get injections on your scalp, our units with "Integration Chains" are recommended by physicians. Please let us know what type of hair system suits you best!

Our Services

Thin Skin - This is a material that is used in a specially designed cranial prosthesis. It has a very natural appearance and is extremely fine and thin. It produces an effect as if hair is naturally growing from the scalp. This is often used for bonding a wig onto the scalp with a specialized bonding glue that will hold it in place for six weeks before it will need to be taken off, cleaned and reattached with fresh glue.

Polyurethane (PU)

Monofilament construction gives the appearance that the hair is actually growing from the scalp. Thin, breathable fabric is placed at the hairline or the front of the head toward the crown section. The top portion of the cap is specially woven to allow for comfort and excellent ventilation. This helps to prevent irritation and itchiness. It will "Breathe" while being worn, thereby preventing heat and moisture build up. Monofilament is considered to be one of the most desirable of wig types. Most women, especially those who wear wigs every day, feel that its superior wearability and natural look more than justify the additional cost.

Monofilament (MONO)

Integration System - An integration hair system refers to the type of base material used and is ideal for women (or men) with thinning hair or diffused hair loss like that in Female Pattern Hairloss. An Integration System allows you to pull your existing, growing hair directly through the unit. This allows you to wear a custom hair replacement system without shaving your head. Your own natural, growing hair is combined with the hair in the system to create a more voluminous and complete head of hair. Depending on the thickness and fullness of your growing hair, there are a variety of different integration hair systems all with varying sizes and shapes of holes in the mesh.

Integration Chains

Just as the Lace Front wigs, the lace is sewn at the front of the wig as well as throughout the entire wig cap. Therefore, the wearer is able to part the hair anywhere, not just at the front. In addition, the wearer is able to pull the hair up into a high ponytail and/or updo. This type of cap construction typically lasts longer than Lace Front Wig.

Full Lace

A hair prosthesis that uses a lace front is a very thin lace lining across the front of the wig that gives the illusion of a natural hairline. This allows for the wearer to be able to part their wig in the front ONLY. The front of the wig can be parted into a side bang, middle part, and put up into a bun/ponytail.
